The store platform a snowboarder built when the software for his own shop was terrible.

Tobi Lütke, a German programmer with no recognised degree, opened an online snowboard shop in 2004 and found every e-commerce product on the market clunky and wrong. So he wrote his own. The snowboard shop faded; the software became Shopify, which now powers millions of merchants and is worth well over $100B. Lütke is also one of the loudest CEO voices for AI-first work — his 2025 memo made 'prove AI can't do it before you hire' company policy.
Why it's indexed
- Powers millions of independent stores; valued at $100B+.
- Grew out of the founder's own failed snowboard shop.
- Its CEO made AI-first working a formal company policy in 2025.
