In 2001 Ben Chestnut and Dan Kurzius were two laid-off web designers running a small design shop to survive. Their side project — an email tool for small businesses — kept growing while the shop faded. They never raised venture capital, kept it profitable, and in 2021 sold Mailchimp to Intuit for about $12B, the largest bootstrapped exit in software history. The counter-example every time someone says you need a round to build something big.
Why it's indexed
- Sold to Intuit for ~$12B without ever raising VC.
- A 'side project' that outgrew the agency it was built to support.
- The reference case for bootstrapped software at scale.
