Remote accelerators: check travel before you apply
Remote-first, hybrid and location-based programmes create different commitments. Compare attendance, time zones and travel costs.
Remote does not always mean no travel
A programme can run weekly sessions online and still require travel. Separate where the company must be based, where founders must attend, and which time zone the schedule uses. These are three different constraints. The comparison below describes published participation arrangements, not admission chances or a guarantee that every future cohort will use the same format.
Three different participation models
| Programme | Published format | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| Techstars Anywhere | Remote-first with North American time zones and three in-person offsites. Official source ↗ | Can the team cover both live sessions and travel? Do not apply this format to every Techstars programme. |
| Endless Frontier Labs | Nine-month programme with five meeting days: three virtual and two at NYU Stern in New York. Official source ↗ | Budget for the two campus meetings and the work between them. |
| a16z Speedrun SR008 | San Francisco residency, 1 February to 16 April 2027. Official source ↗ | Treat residency as a location commitment; confirm the attendance terms directly. |
Put a price on attendance
Build a budget for travel, accommodation, local transport and work displaced by the programme. Use actual quotes for your team and dates. Include the cost of a second founder attending when required, not just the applicant. Compare this total with the useful support you expect, without assigning an invented cash value to every mentor meeting.
If your customers operate in another time zone, map a sample programme week against sales calls and product support. Remote participation can still be a poor operational fit. Ask whether sessions are recorded and whether recordings satisfy attendance requirements; those are not the same question.
Check company location separately
A programme’s location rules can concern the founder, the company or both. Ask which entity signs the agreement, whether incorporation or a local subsidiary is required, and when that must happen. Eligibility to apply does not automatically mean you can complete onboarding without further steps. Get qualified advice on immigration, tax and corporate obligations where needed.
Shortlist by constraints, then support
Write your non-negotiables first: maximum time away, affordable travel cost, time-zone overlap and permitted incorporation arrangements. Then compare the mentoring, customer access and financial terms among the programmes that remain. Use the solo-founder eligibility checks and deal-terms questions alongside this attendance screen.
