Startup grants in France and Europe: find the right funding route
Separate early feasibility support from later-stage innovation funding, and distinguish a grant from equity or repayable finance.
Start with the project, not the maximum award
Write down the innovation you will develop, the evidence you already have and the costs you need to finance. A programme for validated deep technology is not interchangeable with support for exploring an early idea. Location, legal entity, eligible activities and timing can rule out a programme before the headline amount matters.
EIC Accelerator is not a general startup allowance
The European Commission describes the EIC Accelerator as support for high-risk innovation at technology-readiness levels 6–8. The grant component is below €2.5 million; the investment component is €1–10 million. Blended finance combines grant and investment, so it is not wholly non-dilutive. The official page also distinguishes geographic eligibility and grant-only treatment for UK applicants. Official source ↗
French support: compare the instrument and the project
| Route | Published support | Eligibility and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Bourse French Tech | Conditional grant up to €30,000; normally up to 50% of eligible costs, or 70% depending on company category. No application or assessment fee. Official source ↗ | For SMEs undertaking innovation maturation or feasibility work. Maximum programme duration: 24 months. Costs incurred before application are excluded. Payment has two stages, with final reporting and paid-expense evidence required. |
| Innov’up, Île-de-France | Up to €500,000 grant, potentially combined with up to €3 million in an innovation R&D loan or recoverable advance. Intervention rate: 25–70%. Official source ↗ | An Île-de-France establishment or intention to establish there is required; local R&D and regional economic benefit matter. Rolling applications, before project start. Regional strategic priorities apply; marketing, advertising/customer relations, HR/business software and training outside edtech are excluded in the reviewed page. |
These ceilings are conditional, not an entitlement. A recoverable advance or loan is repayable support, not a grant. Provider credits pay for specified services and cannot be spent like cash. Equity investment buys an ownership interest; it belongs in a separate comparison.
The Prêt d’amorçage catalogue URL displayed “offer no longer available” during this check. We therefore do not recommend it as a current application route or reproduce older loan amounts. Consult Bpifrance for an available alternative.
The current Bourse French Tech catalogue replaces our earlier historical explainer as the source for the terms above. Confirm regional assessment, co-funding and when eligible work may begin before committing expenditure.
Prepare an evidence file
Organise five items: a technical description; proof of the problem and demand; a costed work plan; milestones with a way to judge completion; and the company’s ability to fund its share. Separate work already completed from work the proposed award would support. Use supplier estimates where appropriate and document assumptions so the plan can be reviewed.
Grants can create reporting obligations and restrictions on eligible spending. A successful application is not permission to use the money for any operating expense. Read the award agreement and keep invoices and project records in a form that supports the required reporting.
Make the next step proportionate
If you are still validating demand, start with application preparation and the non-dilutive support guide. If computing is the main cost, compare cloud credits separately from cash. For an advanced innovation project, follow the EIC’s official application stages and obtain advice appropriate to the company’s jurisdiction.
